Part of the Allies invasion of Europe during World War Two, Operation Market Garden was, in 1944, the biggest combined air and ground offensive ever seen in warfare. The audacious plan, conceived by General Montgomery, proved too ambitious with 10,000 troops parachuted into the heart of the Netherlands with only 2,000 surviving. For the plan to have worked, British troops needed to take control of a number of bridges over the Rhine in central Holland. By 26th September 1944 it was obvious the objective had not been achieved and as a result the war dragged on well into 1945. The story remains one of the most compelling of the war, with British, American and Polish troops fighting with exceptional bravery and working together to take on Hitler’s Army. Operation Market Garden later became the subject of the 1977 film 'A Bridge Too Far' directed by Richard Attenborough.
