Low-key conclusion to Britain’s longest military campaign
Operation Banner – the longest ever British military operation – has ended after 38 years.
The handover took place at midnight on 31 July, and was a low-key affair with no ceremonial activity, at the Army’s request.
Operation Banner was set up
in 1969 to assist the police in Northern Ireland when ‘the Troubles’ flared up. A total of 763 soldiers were killed during the operation due to terrorist action
