Suez: The Hidden Truths
By John Hunt
Published: 7 October 2009
Featuring extracts from newspapers and books, as well as personal accounts,
Suez: The Hidden Truth
is more of a documentary publication rather than a mainstream history book.
Compiled by Suez veteran John Hunt, the book reveals the real story of what went on in Egypt during the ‘Crisis’ of the 1950s.
As well as providing an overview of the Crisis – the Government refused to class it as a ‘conflict’ – the author also tells the story of the subsequent battle that veterans fought to gain formal recognition, as despite the fact many service men made the ultimate sacrifice, those who served there were not entitled to the General Service Medal.
Mr Hunt himself was one of those who campaigned for – and was eventually awarded – an official Suez medal. As he says in one of the book’s extracts: “The Suez Crisis is an important part of history. Why shouldn’t we recognise these soldiers who have risked their lives on behalf of the United Kingdom?”
For those who also served, this book provides plenty of nostalgia, but for those unfamiliar with the Crisis, it is a fascinating insight into a much-forgotten part of history, and proves why it’s so important to remember.
Suez: The Hidden Truths
is available direct from the author for £7 plus postage costs. To order a copy, call 01772 322 717 or write to 14 Carrfield, Bamber Bridge, Preston, PR5 8BS.
